There is a movement afoot to send a Westland exhibit of farm produce to the Dunedin winter show to be held next June. So worthy a slop should have very general support.

■Charges to be made by way of a levy on all kauri gum exported on and after next Sunday, have been fixed by tbe Control Board as follows:—Fifteen shillings per cent, of the current f.o.h. export value of such kauri gum, during the period. May Ist. 1927. to October 31st. both dates inclusive and 1.1 per cent, of the current f.o.h. export value of such kauri gum on and after November Ist. 1927.
During the ferry steamer Maori’s trip south on Tuesday night tbe sea swept overboard otic of tbe mooring lines when the vessel was off Kaikourn. and it became entangled around the shaft of one of tbe propellors. The services of a diver wore necessary to cut away the line before the steamer left Lyttelton for "Wellington on Friday night.
A Dunedin message states:—Owing to the unbroken weather it is improbable that tbe Frankton Falls dam will lie closed for mining operations on the Kawarau river, until late in May or early in June. Tbe bard frosts have not yet set in, and closing the gates at the present season of mixed warm and cold days would not ensure the required low levels of Lake Wakntipu and the tributaries of tile Kawarati. A mining observer who has just returned from the lakes district reports that the big beach company is unlikely to commerce operations before June, and the Upper Nevis Company will not start before November.

At the last meeting of the Westland Branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association it was resolved to forward .Mr John Cain. Roadman, Totnra Section, Ross Road, the following letter: “At the last monthly meeting of llie above Branch of Canterbury Automobile Association the matter of the condition of road under your care, came, under discussion, and 1 have been instructed on behalf of flu* Committee to congratulate you on the excellent state of the portion, of the road under your charge.
The death occurred on Friday night of the Rev. C. Abcrnethy, who was one of the oldest ministers in the Methodist Church in New Zealand. The late Mr Abcrnethy, who was 82 years of age was superannuated several years ago, and had been, living in retironfent at Christchurch. However, until recently, ho did relieving, work, and u.n to the last He took a keen interest in the affairs of bis church. Hiwife died several years ago, and two of liis sons were killed in the Brent War. A daughter, Mrs T. Ilnzott, also predeceased him. A surviving son is Mr R, C. Abcrnethy, solicitor. of Christchurch. The deceased was in charge of the Methodist Church at Hokitika for a term, many years ago.
A youthful apprentice told the Arbitration Court at Auckland on Thursdav that ns an excuse for absence from work be bad informed his employer that liis young lady’s father was giving a hit of trouble and lie was going to her home to protect the womenfolk. “It was all lies,” be admitted. “I bad a sore back and didn’t want ilie boss to tliltik I was a weakling. T went straight to my home to bed.” Judge Frazer impressed upon the lad that honesty was always (he best policy in such matters as the lad’s action had placed the lad’s father in a. false light. The apprentice had been discharged as (he result of untruths, but bis employer has agreed to take him hack and give him another chance. The lad’s father was so pleased with this outcome that lie went, up to the bench and shook hands with his Honor.
An accident happened after mid-day on Saturday on the Boss load, near Deep Creek, in which Air (’. C. Friend, of Sewell .St... riding a motor cycle, and Mr David Kelly, of Woodstock-, riding a bicycle, in opposite ways came into violent collision. As a result, both men were injured. Afr Kelly was cut about the face and sculp, necessitating a number of .stitches, being brought to town and attended bv Dr J’e.ird. Air Friend was more seriously injured, receiving injuries to his head that made him unconscious, in which state lie remained for several hours, receivin'? vore concussion. On enquiry at the hospital this morning we learned that Afr Friend bad passed a good night, and was easier ibis morning, but bis injuries are of a severe nature. Afr Kelly will be unable to follow his usual vocation for some days at least.
