Two young men, Rasmus Williamson ami Ernest Madson, residents of Kokatalii, laid a very narrow escape from being drowned in the Kokntnhi river, above the traffic bridge on Sunday morning last. It appears they entered the river from Kelly’s road. The river was high owing to there being a small flood. In crossing they kept two low down the lord, and as soon as they entered the main stream the horse and dray went down into some Id or 1 I foot of water, the (fray being submerged and the horse in difficulties with the two men more than waist deep in the dray. Williamson got out in endeavour to assist the horse hack to the shore, hut the struggling horse caused him to go under in the icy cold water and lie was a long time down, and then it was with considerable di(lion! ty that he was able to reach ihe shore. Meantime their calls for help had been heard and Mr Steam, a nearby resident, came on horseback to •noil* assistance. Other help was shortly afterwards forthcoming, and ultimately afte r over an hour’s immersion the horse and dray and the other occupant Madson, were safely brought to shore. The horse was in a had way but ultimately recovered, while the two men were soon none the worse for their immersion in the cold water. The accident apparently was the result of foolishness on their part, as, eoinpartivelv new-comers to the district, they were warned hv other residents of the danger of crossing in the condition of the river, hut took the chance, which nearly terminated fatally. The scene of the accident was in dose proximity to where there was a fatality s«me -few months hack.
