[by TELEGRAPH PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION [ ARREST FOR THEFT. DUNEDIN, April 20. At tlie I’olice Court Alfred Ernest Walter Caldwell, married, with three children, was; charged with breaking and entering. The police stated probably there would he twenty-five charges against accused who was remanded. bail being refused. By his arrest two constables had terminated a long series of thefts. In the early hours of Sunday morning they noticed a man on a bicycle ride into a lane. Cautiously following and climbing a fence they discovered two shops broken into. A further search disclosed Caldwell in the right-of-way in possession of a quantity of stolen property, leather gloves and keys taken from other premises. Later detectives visited Caldwell’s house and found a heterogenous collection nt articles which he confessed having stolen. Accused stated he never began operations till after 2 a.in, finer returning home to get ready for work as a corporation labourer. He admitted all cases of shop breaking, lately reported, were due to his efforts. He had also broken into two Post Office letter boxes. FALSE PRETENCES. DUNEDIN, April 20. Arnold Vaughan Sutton, aged 28. ’ married, was charged with false pretences by obtaining hotel board by valueless cheques. He was sentenced to two months’ gaol and remanded to Wanganui on another charge. STILL MISSING. 1 LEN IN. April 20. He inspected the site of the new courthouse and met deputations. He returns to Wellington to-day. LIBEL ACTION. CHRISTCHURCH, April 20. TJic hearing of an action for alleged libel by Cyrus J. R. Williams, engineer to the Lyttelton Harbour Hoard against the Christchurch “Dress" newspaper begun to-day before .Judge Adams and a jury. The sum of £IOO9 was claimed, Williams alleging that the newspaper falsely and malicously published concerning the plaintiff in his capacity as the Hoard’s engineer letters purporting to be signed by i committee called Port and City Committee, and meaning that plaintiff was incompetent and committed a policy of drift and procrastination. The defence denied the statements reflected on plaintiff in bis capacity as engineer cv that they were defamatory.
