STOWAWAY FROM BRISBANE. AUCKLAND, April 22. Amos Staton (41), a Welshman, who stowed away ou board the Somerset at Brisbane on Anri loth, was dealt with by Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court. He pleaded guilty to the charge. The third officer of the vessel said the Somerset left Brisbane on April loth. About 1 p.m. the same day, while having lunch, a noise was heard in the saloon. \\ itness went to investigate, and on lifting the hatch, Staton emerged front his hiding-place. Staton was put to work with members of the crew, and behaved excellently during the passage to Auckland. Constable Donnelly, who took accused into custody when the ship arrived here, said Staton explained that he stowed away because he was unable to find work in Brisbane. “That is so, Sir,” said Staton, “I thought I would have a better chance of getting a ship here, so I decided to come. 1 have excellent- papers, Sir.’. He took a shotgun out to search for rabbits. and apparently tripped, the gun discharging its contents into his left hand, shattering three fingers and severely injuring a fourth.
