(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.] IT.S.A. EXCLUSION LAW. NEW YORK, April 23. A message from Detroit says:—An order has been issued by the Secretary for Labour. Mr Davies, excluding the residents of the countries bordering the United States from entering America without having passports, properly visaed, and the payment of an eight dollar head tax. It is believed that this will adversely effect twenty thousand persons who are daily coming from Windsor. Canada, to work here at Detroit. Citizens of Canada must have Canadian passports, hut alien residents of the Dominion must have passports of their own country. A special meeting of the Windsor Council was held, and it was decided to urge the Canadian Government immediately to intercede with the United States. The matter lias caused intense feeling, it being alleged that the U.S.A. Labour Unions’ objection to the invasion of Canadian workers has been responsible for the exclusion order. DETROIT DISASTER. NEW YORK. April 23. A fire, following a series of explosions in the paint shop of the new plant of the Briggs Manufacturing Coy. an automobile body firm, at Detroit to-day, resulted in the death of at least twenty workmen, and the injury of over one hundred. The building was a four-storey brick and steel structure and it was destroyed.
