The AVestlaml Acclimatisation .Society lias been advised that the season jur taking opossums in the Westland and Grey districts will he from the 12th June to the 12th September. For tlie AVcstland district licenses will be obtainable from tln> Host Offices at Hokitika and Kinnara. Amended regulations are to be issued in respect to the taking of opossums off freehold areas by the occupants of same. It fs likely the season in the Hu I lor district will be similar to that of Westland and Grey, so as to ensure a uniform season for all the coast.
The imposition of a petrol tax was foreshadowed bv .Mr J. .McKenzie, chairinan ot t)ie Main Highways Board. in tlie course of a statement when a deputation at Thames asked for greater subsidies from tile Hoard for main arterial roads. He said lie fully realised what any county was up against when its main roads were used by all comers. There was no question that something would have to he done to alter the present position. County roads were often ruined hy outsiders, lie thought it was not improbable that a petrol tax similar to that operating in America would he imposed.
A meeting was held at the Countv Chambers on Thursday night to consider a letter from the Associated Chamber of Commerce of New Zealand relative to a proposal to consider the establishment of a Tourist and Publicity Board for New Zealand, in regard to which there would be a conference at Wellington in May and with the ITon. Ministers concerned. There were present on Thursday night:— Messrs l’err.v (Mayor) voted to the chair. \Y. Jeffries cCounty Chairman"!, J. W. Morris (Progress League), \Y. Wilson and T). J. I’.vans (Chamber of Commerce). Apologies were received from Dr Teichclmann and Air Huff (Progress League) and Graham Bros. (Waiho Gorge). Mr Evans explained that the reorganisation proposed was an excellent opportunity for Westland to seek for direct representation on the Board proposed as a means to remove the neglect hitherto suffered. It was important- the district should be represented at the Conference in question so that the claims of Westland with regard to greater attention and publicity should be presented. This view was generally approved and after discussion Mr Wilson moved and Afr Jeffries seconded that Hr Teiehelmann and AFr Evans represent the district at the proposed conference. The motion was carried unanimously.
