The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Air AY. T. Alorpetth) wrote as follows :
MOTOR BOATING OX LAKK KANIERI. Tlic question of issuing licenses to tlie owners of power boats to occupy boat-shed sites on the shore of Lake Kanieri, and also the larger question of permitting power boating at all, on the lake, will shortly be considered by the official controlling authority in Wellington. As Lake Kanieri is the source of tho town water-supply, the matter is one of considerable importance. Steps have already been taken to prohibit bathing in the lake between Hans Hay and Sunny Might, and it seems very doubtful whether it is desirable in tho interests of public health whether tho public should be allowed or encouraged to congregate for recreation purposes anywhere in the near vicinity of the intake. Probably anywhere else in the Dominion or in any other part of the world bathing or swimming in a community's water supply is a criminal offence, and to many people the practice of pleasure boating is only a cjc-. gree less objectionable. 1 understand that, in other parts of the world special attention is given to the question of sterilising public reservoirs and ofj taking every possible precaution toj eliminate any and every possible source, of pollution, infection and impurity in the water. It appears that; noxious germs breed and multiply in, certain vegetable and organic substances, and the presence of such substances in reservoirs is carefully guarded against. In many places it is prae-, tic-ally an impossibility for any one but the custodians to ever approach a public water supply. I am directed to request that your Council will give the matter your careful attention, and when you are In a position to do so, to table a resolution
which will express the decision and t wishes of the inhabitants of the ' Borough, and notify me accordingly. I —Received. The Council discussed the matter at considerable length. ; The Mayor then moved that the Coin-
missioner he. thanked tor the inteicst
lie has taken to safeguard the water supply ; that the authorities he requested to safeguard as far as possible the interests of the town in connection with its water supply ; and that ihe Department issuing licenses for f rapping opossums prohibit Mapping within a quarter of a mile of the lake shore, so as to prevent pollution from l he dead bodies <>f trapped or poisoned opossums, some of which had recently been found floating in the lake. This was seconded hy Mr King and carried. The Council rose at 9 p.m.
