The question of additional loading at Lake Kanieri, brought up at file annual meeting of the Ac: limatisation Society last week, is a subject of special importance to the town of Hokitika. The town is certainly fortunate in having so line a resort so close at hand, hut withal there is not that interest or concern in the development of the resort which should be manifested. Luke Kanieri may lie reached only by way of Hokitika, and it is in the interests of the town to see the resort made the most of. With motoring so much in vogue many hundreds of additional people are now aide to reach the lake quickly and cheaply. There was the case a few days ago when visitors from Christchurch made time foi their limited slay on the Coast. i< have a peep at the lake. And not one of the -011 visitors from the East Coast that day, went away dissatisfied. They were charmed yet they lint touched file fringe of the lake. Were the lake circled by a road, what a magnificent motor run if_ would prove. Mr Furkert. who has just returned from a world trip, is very much impressed with what the Americans do to afford access to beauty spots in the United States Their organisation is described as wonderful. Air Furkert- has full personal knowledge of the accessibility of Lake Kanieri. and if the charms of the lake were opened up as Uncle Sam would do the job, what a remarkable increase there would he to the tourists patronising that great beautv spot. Round Lake Kanieri there is the opportunity for making a distinctly scenic road. There is the bush and the cliffs. There can be a sylvan route, opening out here and there to a clear view of the lake, and the surrounding scenery. We believe, properly surveyed. with an eye for scenic effect. it could be made the most attractive motor drive in all the Dominion. Having, such an asset as this at the hack door of the town, the authorities will be dull and neglectful indeed, if the matter in mind is not brought before the powers that be. with a view to having so attractive a tourist and holiday resort fully developed. We
are now entering on what is being predicted ns likely to be a very quiet period of the year. Relief works are to be undertaken. At l.ake Ivaiiieri there is the opening for very useful work where employment could be afforded all through the winter to many men in the construction of what would be essentially a scenic road of outstanding grandeur, in the beauty of which all could participate by undertaking a motor tour.
