[UY TELEGIIAPIi Will I’UESS ASSOCIATION.] JOCKEY SENT TO GAOL. WELLINGTON, March 31. Sentence of two months’ imprisonment was imposed by -Mr Rage, S.M., to-day on Malcolm Charles MacDonald. Jockey, 33, charged with being idle and disorderly, with no lawful means of support. The police stated that accused had been associating with the professional Australian pickpocket (O’Brien), who was sentenced yesterday to three months on a similar charge. A TRIBUTE. AA’ELLINGTON, March 31. A trihutewas paid by the Rt. l ion. AllCoates to the late Hon. Air Guthrie in his capacity as Chief AA'hip of the Rel'orm Tarty. His duties had brought him into dose contact with all sections of the Legislature, and, notwithstanding with the fact that, during tlioso times, party feeling ran high, he thought that the late Mr Guthrie had made practically no enemies during the time he had tilled the position. It was no surprise when the Vate All* Massey had raised him to the Cabinet. There was little doubt that the heavy official burdens which he carried liatl undermined his health, leading to the necessity of his retirement. His genial kindly personality aiul his advice and counsel would he greatly missed.
VALUELESS CHEQUES. AUCKLAND. March 31. Fifteen charges, relating to the issue nl' valueless cheques, were admitted in the Police Court to-dav. by Alfred Hinton. There was one charge ol stealing two cheques forms, six charges of making false cheques, of a total value of ClOl. 2s Gd, with intent that they should he- acted on as genuine, and ■eight charges of obtaining goods and money of a total value of Ull7, by means of valueless cheques. Tho dates of the charges ranged from February gLh to March 18th. Accused said he obtained cheque forms from various people, and filled them in. signed them, and cashed them. The money has been expended in notions- living, said accused,, who pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. pc;at, OPERATION CHARGES. AUCKLAND. March 31. Three charges of unlawfully using an instrument on March 3 and April 9. l<)2o, and on .June 8, 1926. were nreferred against Hannah Matilda Dalton, aged O'A-enrs, in the Police Court today. After evidence was heard, the accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to. the Supreme Court for trial’. fisherman drowned. BLENHEIM, March 31. It is reported from Wairua Bar that Roy Evles, aged 23. a fisherman and a married man. was lost off a launch whilst trawling the Cloudy Bay this afternoon. The man was alone at the time on the launch, which was found following an erratic course in the trawl. There are no further particulars. FALL DOWN STAIR'S. INVERCARGILL, March 31. Arthur C. Garrick, a returned soldier, living alone, fell down a flight of stairs early this morning. He was removed to the 'Southland Hospital, suffering from a fractured skull. He succumbed to his injuries this evening.
.MAN FOUND DROWNED. CHRISTCHURCH, -March 31. James Johnston Colclough. aged 09, years, was found drowned in a little creek not far from his place of residence at Belfast to-day. Colclough had i’eft his house apparently in his usual health, and when he did not return. a search was made, and his body was found in two feet of water. At the inquest. Coroner Mosley, S.M., found that death was due to drowning : but there was no evidence to show how Colclough got into the water.
