LIBERALISM’S OPPORTUNITY
(‘"Auckland Star.”) On all sides one Jiear.s the opinion expressed that Liberalism has a. wonderful opportunity of providing an alternative for one ol the most incompetent .Ministries that ever afflicted this country. A growing body of New Zealanders, disgusted wit h the Government, yet not prepared to support Labour. ha vo been wondering whether something cannot be done to revive the fortunes of the old Liberal party which for reasons that need not he di> eussed here have sunk very low. These profoundly dissatisfied electors will read with much interest the news that the old banner has been raised again. Tt should never have been lowered. ‘‘ld feral is something that the people understand, something with a history ami a tradition. ‘‘National” is meaningless and uninspiring. The re-forma-tion of the party has been described as a “split,” hut there is no reason why there should ho a cleavage. The National party and the re-constituted Liberal party are in aim and intention one and the same. The task of regeneration is not without its difficulties., hut nothing is impossible to stout hearts and good causes.
