MOTHERLESS PUPS. REARED BY CAT. AUCKLAND. March 28. Mr D. D. W'ii'son. veterinary surgeon of Hamilton, tells a remarkable story of an ordinary <at becoming foster mother of some motherless purebred wire fox terriers, the property of Mr J. M’Kiinton. president of the Hamilton Kennel Club. Blood poisoning set in with tho mother and the chances of -saving the puppies seemed very remote. Mr M’ilson rang up all around Hamilton and eoiti'd not find a foster mother, but Mrs Woodward sent word that she had two eats with kittens, one a Persian and the other a black cat. So one puppy, a day old, was placed beside the black cat, who mothered it well with he* own four kittens. Next day the other two puppies were transferred to the same cat. Slio conVI „ A ’- feed the four kittens and the three puppies, so two kittens were taken and given to the Persian, hut it was found she would only feed the new ones if she could see her own kittens. The following day the balance were transferred, and now she i< tho proud mother of her own four and four plain black ones. The puppies have done exceptionally well; in fact, better than they would have done with their own mother, for at seven days old their eyes are open and they are a tile to walk about, which is reinarkabTe at that age. The foster mother is very proud of her puppies, washing them at regular intervals throughout the day. Tn the ordinary course she would not have enough milk, hut she is eating double the normal quantity of food, giving th e necessary increase in milk.
