CRUELTY TO MARE
CHRISTCHURCH, March 25
"This is the worst case I have known for ten years” said the Inspector for the Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in the Magistrate’s Court. “The mare used by the accused in his milk cart had eighteen sores. She had broken knees and took three hours to travel four miles, and had to be destroyed along with its stable mate.” The milkman was William Kneashaw. He was charged that on .-March 19th. at Fislierton lie cruelly ill-treated a roan mare by working it in harness while it was suffering from sores. "I have sent only one man peremptorily to gaol in the last ten years for cruelty to animals” remarked the Magistrate, ••you will be lined £2.) and costs, in default one month’s imprisonment.
