Extract from an exchange of March 21th. 1817.—The Knmara Diggings,— We gather from an exchange that the great political event of the last few weeks has been the sale of the Knmara water-race to the Government. The result lias taken place after much bargaining, the Government having been forced front their original offer of L'GoOf! into giving .28000 c-aslt for tbo property. They felt that the -ion of the Knmara Company's works
was necessary to the proper carrying out of'their system of water supply, and therefore had to pay the money. The company, which had only expended £2500 on their property, make £660.') by the transaction. Out of this they have to pay ah’ liabilities and contracts subsequent to that date.
During bankruptcy proceedings in connection with the estate of Wylde Brothers, returned* soldier farmers at Barryown, held a Greymouth on Wednesday, the Lands Department was
severely criticised for putting in a claim as mortgagee for all assets irrespective of the amounts due in wages to several employees. Creditors expressed the opinion that wages should he paid first. Secured creditors represented £3998 17s and unsecured creditors £594 4s 3d, a deficiency of £396 Is Kid being shown. Bankrupts blamed the slump in wool and sheep for
their position, also the action, of the Grown in claiming the timber cut on the property, a balance of £l7O on the sale of which is the only cask available. The Commissioner of Crown Lands said that the securities were much over-estimated at £4(107 4s 6d, and he would he glad to accept £I2OO for the land. Air F. A. Tvitchinghain, representing bankrupts, said Crown’s claim was morally indefensible, and be characterised the soldier settlement operations ns a scheme for which the people of New Zealand were now paying through bankruptcies. It was decided to leave realisation of the assets in the hands of Air F. Congreve and the Deputy Official Assignee. Ah A. Naylor, and that an effort he made to induce the Afinistcr of Lands to withdraw the claim for the timber.
