A very low atmospheric pressure was experienced yesterday. From the early morning there was a steady drop in the barometer reading, which at noon registered 29.22. As the afternoon wore on there was a continued steady drop until at ."> p.m. the very low record of 28.88 was rceo(i'ded. Shortly after there was a gradual rise, and bv 9 o’clock the reading was 29.20. the rise continuing during the night and at 9 o’clock this morning it was 29.90. The steady rain of Tuesday night and yesterday brought down a verv heavy flood in the river yesterday afternoon and at night it was riming a banker, with a large lot of drift wood coming down. The southerly gale which had shown signs of dropping in the afternoon, sprang up again with increased violence after five o’clock and it was a raging gale during the evening with heavy shows intervals. Mr Thomas Spencer, an employee ot tlie Hail way Department, ami a resident of Cobdcn, who entered the Grey Hirer Hospital to undergo an operation, died yesterday in the institution at the age of 52 years. He leaves a widow and son.

The funeral of the late Mrs doim ( onefold of Maliitalii. the victim of the alpine tragedy on Copeland Pass on Friday night hist, took place yesterday afternoon to Hokitika cemetery, the Rev. Father McKay conducting the service at the graveside. The funeral moved from St. Mary’s C hurch where requiem Mass had been celebrated earlier in the day. There was a large asseml •hlgo of mourners from all parts of the district and many floral tributes were placed on the grave.
