NORTHERN DEFENCE CRUMPLES SHANGHAI, March 19.
The Shantung Army’s defence of Sunkiang front (south of Shanghai) has crumpled, and the Northerners are retreating upon Shanghai. The Southerners are now only 18 miles away from Shanghai.
The collapse of the Shantung Army was caused by the Nationalists effecting a Hanking movement, as the result of which General Sun Oman Fang’s men holding Minliang further eastward found their position untenable, and hastily retreated, without making the slightest attempt at resistance. Two thousand of The retreating men have already arrived at Shanghai. Foreign military experts now consider that the Nationalists are able to occupy Shanghai at their leisure, and that they, may be expected here within a couple of days. SHANGHAI, March 19.
It is reported that the Nationalists have captured Changehow, on the Shanghai-Nanking Railway. The firing of the guns at Sunkiang was heard in Shanghai last night. SHANGHAI, March 19.
