MINING WORK AT ROSS
Mr T. E. Y. Seddon. ALB., has received the following from the Ministoi of Alines in respect to office mining work at Ross:—
I duly received your letter of the 18th ultimo, and your further letter ol the same date to the Hon. Dow me Stewart has been referred to me for consideration.
When the proposal to transfer the Moss mining work to Hokitika was first advanced by the Warden, it was thoroughly investigated bv the Alines Department and it was found that the change would prove beneficial to the administration, to the legal profession and ultimately to the public generally. To enable the residents of Moss to pay their mining rents at a local office, the Police Constable there has been appointed a Sub-Receiver to the Receiver of Gold Revenue, Hokitika. 1 am advised that very little actual mining work has been put through the Ross Court for a number of years, and the prospects of the volume of business increasing are not very great.
It is considered that no inconvenience should he caused by requiring applications for mining township leases to he heard at the Hokitika Court, Applicants who find it inconvenient to appear at the hearing of the application may file a declaration to that effect which declaration is exempt from Stamp Duty. As a general rule it is only in-ease of very great importance. or which are disputed, where the appearance of the applicant is required in court.
