HOKITIKA SAVINGS BANK
The new quarters of the Hokitika Savings Rank, a- very fine brick structure in Hamilton Street, which has been open for some little time past, was used yesterday by the Trustees for the first time. Those present were.- Hon. H. L. Michel (President), Dr Teichelmami, Messrs G. A. Perry. C. Evans, I). Lynch. W. E. Williams and I). Evans.
The President took occasion to welcome hack Dr Teichelnmun who had attended the world conference held in October last at Philadelphia. I'.S.A.. of representatives of Savings Banks institutions. Mr Michel thanked Dr Teicheimann for the I rouble and expense he Iliad gone to. and for the a bio manner ho had represented the Dominion institutions.
I>r Teicheimann acknowledged the vote of appreciation passed hy the cotrustees, and the remarks of the President. He stated the Conicrence was a very important and busy one. There wore several sessions and numerous committed meetings. The outstanding work of the Conference was in regard to measures to promote thrift and as regards publicity methods to attract the attention of (he public hy publicity to the advantages of saving. Ho had had a pleasant trip and saw a great deal hut was none the less pleased to ho hack again. Mr W. Wilson. Manager of the Bank, applied for leave of absence for eight or ten months for the purpose of taking a health trip with Mrs Wilson to England. It was proposed to leave about May, subject to sanction and the approval of the locum proposed. Mr Alexander Aitken. formerly manager of the Bank of New Zealand here.
Leave was granted unanimously and the locum approved subject to formal ratification at next meeting when Air Aitken was expected to he here to take over ihe interim duties of Manager of the Savings Bank from the balance shortly to take place.
At the conclusion of the routine business of the Trustees, several gentlemen attended hy invitation to mark the occupancy of the now hanking quarters.. Among those present were Messrs A. ('. Shaw, Afiannger of the Bank of Now Zealand. TV. Urquhnrt. Manager of the National Bank, H. F. Cooke, Malinger of the Rank of New South Wales. J. Burns, representing the Post Office Savings Rank, .J. H. Wilson. Savings Rank auditor, J. ■!. Breeze, President of the Hospital Trustees, representing the local bodies. The President referred to the early history of the Rank founded upwards of 01 years ago. and its steady growth since its foundation. Interesting references were made to the early history of the hank, which began with very small beginnings and had now about £105,000 in deposits and about £20,000 of accumulated profits. The institution had ample reserves much of which was in a very liquid state and at ready call. Me spoke ol the pleasant- relutings existing with other hanking institutions and of the good work done hy former trustees and managers, specially mentioning the long and useful connection of the Into "William Duncan as Manager with the institution. Under the present .Manager Air Wilson, the Rank had continued to progress in a remarkable, manner, and they were lall proud of the Rank which was established now ill such excellent quarters. Air Michel concluded hy wishing Air ami Mrs Wilson a pleasant, and healthful holiday trip. Mr Breeze congratulated the Trustees on the good work done hy the institution for the community, lie referred specially to the grants to the Westland Hospital, assistance which had helped to make it the fine institution it was for the benefit of the people to-day.
The toasts of the “Sister Institutions” was proposed, also that of “The President,” short- speeches being made hy Afessrs Shaw, Cooke, Urquluirt, Lynch, J. H. Wilson and W. AVilson, all facilitating the Trustees and the President on the occasion, and the creditable advancement the hanking institution was making.
