Lord Birkenhead declared it was vital that the Crown should he supplemented by one authoritative, dignified tribunal, qualified to deal with all Empire subjects. A judicial committee was an important factor in keeping alive the immense unity of the Empire. Lord Birkenhead forecasted proposals shortly to he made to supplement the Privy Council.
MEAT TRADE. LONDON. March 15. Weddel’s review of the meat trade says: “With every man. woman and child consuming an average of over two pounds weekly. Britain rapidly is becoming the greatest meat-eating country in the world. The outstanding experience of 1925 is the capacity of the public to increase the consumption immediately prices are brought low enough. So long as they remain at the present level the consumptive demand will he sufficient to ashsorb even heavier supplies than in 1925. Tlie importation of foreign chilled meat despite the trade depression reached 930.035 tons, orim pared with 886.655 in 1925. ’The “Review” estimates the United Kingdom consumption at 2.055,023 compared with 2.002,135 and points out that Home-grown sheep have increased by a million yearly in the last three years. DANIELS MYSTERY. LONDON. March 12. Many London newspapers have sent correspondents to Boulogne to deal with the mystery of Nurse Daniels’ death. All report increasing excitement. A daily stream of witnesses are offering statements to the police. The only concrete development to-day is the French Magistrate’s filial request that Nurse McCarthy he sent through Scotland Yard to attend and give evidence on March IStli. Nurse McCarthy is undecided whether to go.
The “ Sundav News ” quotes the magistrate conducting the case as saying: “We have a pretty shrewd idea what happened. The mystery is already solved and we need only witnesses. We are exerting all forces of French justice and will not let the murderers escape from France.”
The “ News of the World’s ” special correspondent asserts, however, that the French police arc now convinced that Miss Daniels was accustomed to drugs and died from an overdose. White’s only relative is a brother residing in New /inland. BRITISH TOBACCO DUTY. LONDON, March 12.
Budget speculations have been renewed by a report that Air W. Church, ill (Chancellor of the Exchequer) is restricting the clearances of tobacco from bond, as well as of Continental wines. It is believed that the Chancellor is seeking to increase the tobacco duties without involving the consumer. ’lbis would, in both cases, favour Empire brands.
