A Bolamn. despatch says Beires lias returned to the Island ol Bissagos, off the Portuguese-Guinea coast, giving no reason for the postponement of his trans-Atlantic- hop. BOOTLEGGERS SHOT. NEAV YORK, March 12. The resumption of bootleggers and the attempting of a. sensational delivery, resulting in the death of three persons, and wounding of five others, marked a high point in the Chicago crime wave to-day*. Two bootleggers were literally torn to pieces hv a fusilade of machine gun bullets while sitting in an automobile in a busy street. A rival gang took this revenge upon informers who had helped the police to make arrests in a raid upon liquor stores. A third bootlegger was shot dead while leaving his house.
PRISONERS ESCAPE. NEW YORK, March 13. Six prisoners condemned to death •for killing a warder last year, attempted to escape from Joliet prison.’ Three got outside the walls. Only one, however, escajied, hut having been supplied with arms by confederates they engaged in a shooting duel with the police, resulting in the wounding of two officers and three convicts. MEXICAN WAR REPORT. MEXICO CITY, March 12. The War Department’s report says that forty-two rebels and six Federal soldiers were killed in a battle which is believed to have successfully concluded the campaign against the unrulv elements in the State of Jalisco.
