HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONDAY, MARCH 7th
The Committee met at 7 p.m. Present :—Messrs. H. R. Sweney (.Chairman). Richards, Preston, C'oulson, Shannon, Unsold', Redder. Clarke and Conning (lion. sec.). The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INAVAR.D CORRESPONDENCE, (.'apt. IC. B. Harrison waited on the Committee, and after hearing him, it was resolved to order a copy oi the War Records placard for the use of the school. From Education Board, Christchurch, asking for particulars of expenditure on which subsidy was asked for.—Received and particulars supplied. From same, enclosing copy of amending act of High School Board Act. Received. From Rector (Air E. Partridge) reporting the general health of the scholars was good. The roll numbci was 294 primary and 87 secondary. Aliss Lynn was absent for three weeks owing to illness, hut was now hack on duty, ATr Stanley relieving. Afiss Reid was acting as third assistant, applications being invfted for the permanent position. Alisses Pedder and Havill had left for college. Aliss Ycale had been transferred from Runanga to Hokitika and had taken up her duties. The High School Board had made a grant of £SO towards the expenses of the commercial classes. The Swimming Sports had been held on the 24th and had proved very successful. On AVednesday last 71 children had been successful in swimming distances from 25yds to 2500yds. A number of dual desks had come to hand from the Board’s workshops and more were to. come. The two secondary assistant teachers had been notified by the Education Board that the ' special grant from the High School Board would be reduced hy £SO per year from the end of the year. He Cplt that a decided wrong would he inflicted on the teachers if this proposal was carried out. \ lecture by Air Foxton had been arranged for'March 15th. A concrete cricket pitch had been laid down. A large mower was required and repairs to the school organ.—Deceived. Tt was resolved to write the Canterbury Board protesting against the proposal to reduce the salaries of the assistant teachers. The arrangements for the lecture were referred to the Chairman. Rector and Secretary. Tt was resolved to procure matting for the pitch. It was’ resolved to level a further portion of the front grounds. Air Partridge reported that Air beddon had offered to supply some trees for the school grounds.—Received and accepted with thanks, the Grounds Committee to arrange with Mr Seddon a S to the style of shrubs suitable. Accounts as scheduled were passed for payment. It was reported that there was no word of the* High School Board meeting the Committee and it was resolved that the Secretary write the Chairman of the High School Board again, asking the Board’to meet the Committee as soon as possible. Alessrs Clarke and Sweney were appointed visitors for the month. ! The Committee rose at 8.40 p.m.
