Four thieves, during the night, entered the house of a rich merchant, Solomon Cicurel, and chloroformed his wife, who was in bed. They attempted a similar course with Solomon, but he resisted. He was then stabbed to death. The thieves then secured jewellery worth six thousand sterling. Three arrests have been made. N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. AUCKLAND, March G. At the Miriwai Beach motor races, the New Zealand Motor Cup resulted— R. B. Wilson’s “Studz ” 1. Hope Bartlett's Sunbeam 2. Time 3G 2-5. These were the only two cars to finish. Wilson won the race last year. Light Car Cup.—Hope Bartlett’s Bugatti 1, A. living’s Bugat'ti 2, A. J. Rovcroft’s Bugatti 3. The winner, who comes from New South Wales, developed the speed of 72 miles an hour. The Open Sprint Handicap was won by the- Todd Motor Company’s Chrysler. The Open Handicap was won by W. H. Cropp’s Chevrolet. The Ladies’ Handicap was won by Mrs McFarlnne in an Anseldo car. The All Comers’ Handicap was won bv Cropp’s Chevrolet. The course for the New Zealand Motor Cup was fifty miles. Great crowds attended the races, which were free from accidents.
