RUGBY RULES. LONDON. March 3

“Barbarians” defeated East Midlands by 24 points to 11 in a match arranged to test the New Zealand touch rule.

Colonel Phillip Trevor states: “This rule obviously puts it premium upon the cleverness and ingenuity of the tailback. lie must be a man of great resource. A back division which cannot* indulge in ingenious hand-to-hand passing would stand no chance.”

The Daily Chronicle states; “It is obvious that if this rule goes into the statute book, if will kill forward play, and will speed up the game to such an extent that the ordinary club player will be unable to stand it. Most Rugby men agree that the game is quite fast enough alrwuly.” Mr Frank Mitchell, writing in the “Morning Post,” says: “The operation of tliis new rule did not impress the majority of the spectators, and in many cases it worked unfairly. A fullback outside the 25 line might just as well allow himself to be tackled as 1,0 kick to flio middle of the field.”
