The monthly meeting of the Council iva.s held at the County Chandlers at 7.10 p.iu. Present: Messrs Parry (voted to the chair), AYells, Foote, lyvniis. Paterson. Armstrong and Peek. An apology was made for Air Wood’s absence.
The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. The outward correspondence was approved. f\WA ft P COP I! KSPONP EN CE.
From G. Penliuglon, Christchurch, asking particulars of stalking season in Am burn district.—Received and supplied. From Department of Internal Affairs acknowledging information regarding suggestions for opossum season in AVostlancl.—Received. The Secretary reported the Chairman had waited on the Conservator of Forests with regard to an open season, and the Society find now written lo the Director at AA’ellington on the subject. From same granting two additional deer stalking licenses for South "Westlaud.— Received. The Secretary explained the licenses wore for an oversea’s visitor and a friend, for whom provision was being made on one of the blocks formerly allocated. From General Manager. Tourist and Health Resorts, explaining the cottage at Lake Kanieri was at present under long lease, hut that it. would he necessary to see Hint the conditions of the lease were fulfilled.--Received and referred to the A'isiting Committee.
From Afarine Department reminding all concerned that the ordinary fishing licenses for the Dominion did not cover Rotorua and Taupo districts, for which special fees were payable.— Received.
From Grey District Society suggesting a joint meeting at: Lake Kanieri on the 13th. inst. to go into the matter of the future control of the hatchery.—Received and agreed to, the visitors to lie entertained at lunch. From F. AY. Ross, asking for lease of small portion of the Society’s reserve near Lake Kanieri for the erecion of a small cottage.—Received, to be considered by the visiting committee. with special conditions as to the type of building to be erected. GENERAL. The Secretary reported with regard to the finance.—Received as satisfactory. Accounts to the amount of £67 13s 9d were passed for payment. ft. was also reported the repairs at the hatchery were in hand by the caretaker, and it was decided to have these expedited. A number of copies of the Society s publication “Beautiful Westland.” were still on hand and it was resolved to make a special effort to dispose of same.
Ranger Foote reported on a visit to the Mananui sawmill where the disposal of the sawdust was considered to be effective, and quite satisfactory, It
was stated the position at the Kamcri tram mill was still unsatisfactory, and the copy of a letter sent to the Minister of Justice during the Atcek referring to the light fines inflicted was laid on the table. . The Secretary took exception to such •i letter being sent without reference to the Society. The action was contrary to the instructions issued to the Ran-
ger. The Chairman thought the meeting should disassociate itself with the report which was out of order as far as the .Society was concerned. Air Armstrong said the letter was a statement of fact, and would not ho taken exception to on that account. The Secretary again commented on the irregular procedure, and the fact that with so important a matter the Society had not. been consulted. Air Armstrong suggested it lx? a recommendation to the annual meeting next month to appoint Aressrs .T. King, AY. Braddon. E. .T. Lloyd and S. AY. Midland life members of the Society.— Agreed to. Air Armstrong gave notice- to move at the annual meeting that the name of the Society be AA r estland Acclimatisation Society and that the activities as a Tourist Branch be discontinued for the future.
The annual meeting will he hold on the 7th. April, following the monthly Council meeting that evening. The meeting concluded at 8.10 p.m.
