TIMBER IMPORTS
SERIOUS SLUMP CAUSED

One of the factors contributing substantially to the present unemployment problem is the serious slump in the sa win ill ing industry. ihe indications this week are that the slump is not vet. at its worst, and more mills will close down within a few days.
■Recently one of the largest, millowners was considering: the drastic curtailment of output at the mills under his control in the South Island, and within the last fortnight two West Coast no ills hare shut down. A Christchurch sawmiller said, "hen interviewed : “Sawmillors are far ed with two courses of action. Production can he reduced all round to eonform with the dwindlin'.: market for Now Zealand timber, or as an alternative. every man can go on his own and fight- for the market in the manner he thinks host.
