fair amount of building l- still going on in South Westland, where niniiy of the settlers now have greatly improved dwellings. In addition to the new halls in process of erection at llarihari and Matainui. additions are being made to the hotel at W'aiho Gorge; which despite its size, is still inadequate for the pressure ol visitors at times. At the Tata re. near' Waiiio, a commodious two storey dwelling is being erected by Mr Paganini, and at Cooks l lat Messrs Sullivan Bros are preparing to erect an accommodation house. These works with the bridges in progress of erection, have kept the local sawmills fairly well employed. Bridge building is progressing steadily, and in addition to the principal structure lately erected oil the main south road, some smaller bridges also have had attention. Du ling this year there is not likely to ho any slackening in the bridge building programme for South Westland.

On Saturday morning early a vehicle was to be seen making its way tip Gibson Quay, which recalled memories of the days when the train ran regularly to and from Kanieri. 1 lie vehicle in question was the newly adapted jigger just constructed by T\ ild and Bassett for the liokitika-Kanieri Sawmill Coy. for the purpose of taking the workmen to the bush daily. The vehicle is propelled by an adapted motor engine, and the body is built on the lines of a tram, with seating accommodation for fourteen. Quite a fair speed is possible and the result is a saving of about half an hour each way in travelling time as well as affording a more comfortable, convenient ride. 1 lie jigger appears to lw a marked success and will be greatly appreciated by the workmen. The adaptability of similar machines for light transport over bush lines is at once apparent, and no doubt ibis use will come into vogue in duo course.
