BAND CONTEST
[BY TELEGKAPH —PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION.] THE QUICKSTEP. WELLINGTON, Feb. 27. For the band contest yesterday the weather was ideal, and the Quickstep Competition nos decided on Athletic Park. The attendance was about fifteen thousand. Tho contest has been a wonderful success from every point of view. There were thirty-six bands competing in tho Quickstep. Separate prizes were allotted for each grade. The conditions for both grades were the same except that the A Grade bands played Mr C. Trussell’s “Wairarapa,” and the B Grade played “The Outpost.” Tho First Canterbury Battalion Band (Ashburton), and St. Ivilda (Dunedin) were the popular fancies in the A. Grade, and Invercargill Civic in the B. Grade, and they were placed in that order by the judges. At the close of the competition, massed bands ' played the contest march under the baton of the judge, Mr Halliwell. Results:- —• A. GRADE. Ist Canterbury Mounted.? Grade Bund obtaining tlie highest musical marks in the two test selections and the Quickstep was won by Queen Alexandra’s Own Band (Wanganui). The Besson Shield, under the same conditions, was also won by the Queen! Alexandra’s Own Band. The Hawke’s Shield for the A Grade Band obtaining the highest aggregate points in the two test selections and the Quickstep, including drill, was won by the Queen Alexandra’s Own Band. , , The Conn Shield for the A. Grade Band obtaining the highest aggregate points in the two test selections, the Hymn Contest, and musical points in the Quickstep, was won by the Queen Alexandra’s Own Band. The Boosey Shield for the B Grade Band obtaining the highest aggregate music marks in the two test selections and the Quickstep, was won by tbe Fifth Mounted Rifles (Oamaru). The McLeod Cup for the Band securing tbe most points in the Hymn contest was won by the Greymouth Municipal Band. CHAMPION OP CHAMPIONS (Silver Cornet and Gold Medal).
