TAXI DRIVER FINED
AUCKLAND. Fob. 23. Leslie A\alters, 28, described as a taxi driver, was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of u motor, car in Queen Street and having assaulted Detective Crnigio. The latter was driving the ear to the police station when the accused slipped the handcuffs l and kicked the deter l ive three times in the face before ho wax overpowered. poverty bay identity killed GISBORNE, Feh. Si.
A distressing fatality occurred at Alatawhero this evening in the death of Mr Patrick -Malone, the wellknown horse trainer, and one of the pioneers of Poverty Bay. Air Malone was driving in a gig boulevard, when he noticed a friend, and shook- his whip at him in salutation. The horse suddenly jumped forward, and Mr Malone was thrown out, falling heavily on his forehead, and being killed instantaneously. The deceased was 73 years of age. S.S. KAIAPOT DELAYED WELLINGTON. Feb. 21. The Union Company's cargo steamer Kaiapoi, was to sail front Wellington last evening for Newcastle, hut members of the crew refused to put to son. alleging their quarters wore unfit for occupation, owing to fumes from tlie fumigation the vessel underwent in the periodical fumigation at Wellington yesterday. The Kaiapoi was still delayed at an early hour this morning.
AN INQUEST. CHRISTCHURCH, Feh. 21
The death occurred in Christchurch Hospital nn Tuesday night of David Noel Nelson, aged 11 years, who was injured by being knocked down by a motor car at the corner of Sclwyn St. and Lincoln Road at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Ail inquest was opened before Air Lnwry. Coroner. Evidence of identification was given hy the hoy's father. Tom Nelson, of 504, Sclwyn Street, a labourer. He said that he had last
seen the hoy before tlie accident at about G. 45 p.in. He had suggested a walk and went into the house to gel. his hat and when he came out he found that the hoy had been hurt. He did not see tlie accident happen. The inquest was adjourned to allow the police to make further investigations.

At the Police Court, two well dressed men, William Grady, aged 37. alias Whitehall, and .James O’Neil, aged 40. alias Sid Morgan, pleaded guilt' to being idle and disorderly, with insufficient means of support. Chief Detective Gumming said these men are international criminals, one from England and the other from Canada. Both are professional pickpockets ami have been in the Dominion only three weeks. Yesterday they were arrested in the Domain following their calling. One man had £(>() and the other £25 when arrested. They were remanded till to-morrow.

Under the existing law, taxis over two tons in weight are liable lor heavy traffic licenses. A deputation was informed by the Premier that their claim that all taxis should he placed on an equal fooling would be taken into consideration.

Harvey, licensee of the Shorllaiid Hotel, was convicted with costs, on a charge, by the Telegraph Department for constructing or establishing a plant capable of receiving wireless messages without first obtaining a license. Evidence showed that a free permit could be given for six days to install anti demonstrate a wireless set. Counsel for Harvey said he had only given the agent permission to install the set on trial, therefore he should not he held responsible. Magistrate Piatts held that Harvey was responsible for anything constructed on his property. He should have obtained a temporary permit. CAPTAIN DEAD. DUNEDIN, February 24. Obituary.—Captain Sundstrum. aged 75 years, for many years a master mariner on the New Zealand and Australian coast. He brought the steamer “ Rena ” from England and was a director of the Y.M.C.A. lie served as a member of the Harbour Board. burglary charge. PALMERSTON N.. Feb. 24. Leonard Reginald Frown, aged 21. and John Ernest Hoskins, aged 24, (travellers) were charged at the Police Court this morning with breaking and entering a local ironmongers establishment and stealing therefrom ■£lß 4s in money and goods. Tliev were remanded till next Tuesday, It is understood eight further similar charges will he profered against them.
