UNIVERSITY COUNCIL
AUCKLAND. Feb. 24. New Zealand University Council resolved that a. committee on appointments of university professors had been set up consisting ol the Chancellor. Principal. Hacklam. Bakcwcll-T-|on. Fmvlds. and Side.v. and power was delegated to this committee. A suggestion by Sir James Wilson that the subject of agriculture should no*' be excluded from the syllabus of secondary schools, was referred to the Entrance Board for consideration, ecause of the dearth of entries the University essay prizes, the Now Zealand University Council decided td-dny that the whole question of prizes he referred to the Academic Board for investigation and report. F. Milner (Rector of the Waitaki High School) said he was astounded at the"’ dearth of candidates, and the low qualitv of the essavs. He considered there'was a certain obligation on schools of history and social science, to inspire students with an eagerness and enthusiasm to compete. His experience as judge was that, many ol the essavs were not above sixth form standard.
