Vancouver to Sydney, a /,.00 miles flight, is projected by four British aviators, starting from here early ill June, in a Sikorsky seaplane. The party comprises two Australians, one Canadian and one Englishman. Three of the party. Captain John Clarke, of England, Engineer L. T. Palmer, Canadian Flying Officer, and Gilbert Jenkins, of .Melbourne, are here seeking civil contributions to a 7;>.00() dollars fund, much of which is already assured for the cost of the enterprise. Cape. E. A. Giles, navigator, is coming later from Adelaide.
The airmen plan to forestall a similar flight under preparation by Americans, , starting from Sail Francisco and San Diego. Their plane would weigh 21,000 pounds and would be capable of a hundred miles an hour lor forty houis. Honolulu (2,450 miles) is the first stage, thence Fanning Island, to Eiji, to Sydney. They expect to reach Sydney in ten days. AMERICA'S LIQUOR LAW. WASHINGTON, February 22. Senator Edge (New Jersey. Republican) introduced a joint ■resolution proposing a. constitutional amendment permitting a state option system of prohibition. which was reiei red to a judiciary committee. The amendment would, permit the States their discretion to authorise and manufacture the sale of beer, wines or liquor of greater alcoholic content, under certain restrictions of the Federal Government. The liquor would be manufactured only In that State for consumption in that State, and transportation to other States would be prohibited. The Federal Government could limit the number of manufacturing retail establishments and the number of sales to each person. The proposal is patterned after the Canadian system. There is no possibility of action concerning it during the present session of Congress. TO FLY ACROSS THE SOUTH POLE WASHINGTON. February 22. I A Chicago message states Commander Byrd will attempt to fly across the South Pole, in the summer of 1928, using an American Fokker machine. The expedition will he financed privately. ACROSS THE ATLANTIC. RIO DE JAXIERO. Feb. 22. De Pinedo arrived at Pernambuco from Port Natal at 1.20 this afternoon.
