The liner Port Hardy's chilled beef cargo from Australia has attracted much attention at Smithlield. Five hundred liiml-quarters were displayed at several stalls. These were keenly inspected by numerous experts, all of whom were greatly impressed with their excellent condiLicu and appearance. It was considered wonderful as the beef was killed on December 9th. and lflfh. It compared most favourable with the Argentine chilled beef hanging alongside. which had been chilled for barely half the time.
The concensus of opinion is that this shipment lias proved tile possibility of bringing chilled beef from Australia in a condition equal to that from South America.
I lie Port Hardy’s beef lias been unfortunate in not only being delayed for about a lort night, but ‘in arriving at Smithlield on a glutted market, two or three delayed Argentine cargoes being thrown on the market, amounting lo nineteen thousand ijuarters. which is a record glut. This enormous supply has resulted in a henry drop in prices. The Port Hardy's lavf is only realising ■ld per pound. The Argentine hindquarters art fetching one-eighth to iivc-eigths a of penny per pound more.
