RENOWN ARRIVES

AUCKLAND Fob. 22. In the early morning light showers of rain foil, but tlio weather cleared by ten o’clock, when a sainte of 21 guns announced the arrival of H.M.S Renown at the entrance to the harbour. There is a fair prospect of the min holding off to permit the immense crowds assembled, witnessing the procession. DUKE AND DUCHESS LAND. When the Royal barge had brought the Yorks and their immediate suite to the wharf and they stepped ashore, they were conducted to a Dais inside the main gates. A guard of honour was furnished by a party of bluejackets. The Chairman and Secretary of the Harbour Hoard were presented, and mUo members of the Board and their wives. The Duke of York was then presented with a local address of welcome. The party were met at the wharf gates by the '.Mayor and Town Cleric and informally welcomed to the city. The Yorks next motored to Government House where they rested a while and then drove hv way of Anzne Avenue and Customs St:, to Queen St. to the Town Hall through cheering crowds, amidst the waving of banners and streamers, from many parts of the province, bearing legends conveying the warmest expressions of welcome. Queen. St. was lined on either side with masts and poles swathed spirally in hands of orange and green, tho centre tramway poles being similarly decorated.

The returned soldiers paraded in strong force and lined the route of the procession from the wharf to Customs St. From this point to the Town Hall the line of the procession was roped off. so tho way was clear for their Highnesses .amidst cheering throngs, whose welcome certainly lacked nothing in warmth.

The naval men formed a guard of honour outside the Town Hall. When the Royal Parly entered the Town Hall for tho civic reception the vast audience stood while the strains of the National Anthem peeled forth. The Duke and Duchess and suite, with Ministers of the Crown and leading officials and citizens took their places on the stage and the address of welcome from tho city was rend, tho Duke replying. From the Town Hall the Royalties retraced the route to Government House and the public, functions for the day concluded. After lunch they will he motored around tho city and suburbs to viewpoints of interest.
