ANAESTHETIC DEATH.
CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 21
The inquest was concluded to-dav into the death of Agnes Joyce Swanson. aged 5. who had one foot almost severed by being caught' in the knives of a mowing machine at i-eeston. and who died the same evening under an | anaesthetic at the Christchurch Hosi 1 pital. The evidence was that the child had an enlarged thymus gland, and that this caused asphyxia when the ether was i-iciiiiinistered. The medical testimony was that the enlargement of this gland was not discoverable by external examination, and tbe child appeared normal. When the ether was administered her breathing became irregular, and it almost immediately ceased. Restorative measures were taken instantly, and the surgeon even opened the abdomen and massaged the heart, but the child was | dead. The Coroner. Air Mosley, S.AL. said he was satisfied tin it. every care had been taken by the medical officers at the operation. fatal fall. IX VERCA'RGILI . Feb. 21. At tbe inquest on Cecil Shields, the verdict- was that deceased died from haemorrhage and shock, caused through accidentally falling from a duty tvhile carting gravel on February 19th.
