A dense pall of yellow poison-gas bangs over the scene of the explosion. The Saint Auhan chemical works, which employed nearly 1.000 men. was engaged chiefly in the extraction of chlorine gas and soda from sea salt. It was just as the workmen had left for their midday meal that the chlorine reservoir exploded. Most of the men escaped to an area free from gas. Twenty of them, however. who were in a building adjoining the chlorine reservoir were rapidly suffocated. The factory’s first-aid detachment, wearing gas masks, managed to rescue 00 who were lying unconscious in the sheds.
