BATH TRAGEDY. WELLINGTON. Feb. 16. Evidence at tbe inquest on the child, Ratcliffe. drowned at Thorndon Baths on Saturday afternoon, showed that despite exhaustive enquiries by tbe police of many of tbe bathers, none came forward able to throw light on the matter. Deceased’s companion. Minnie Day aged 10. said that she fell into deep water, and deceased went to her and held her up till a boy came and brought her to safety. After she got dressed, she looked round for deceased, but could not find her. Tfio custodian said that about 200 were present, at the time. He was in bathing costume all day. walking up and down, and was sometimes in the water. Coroner Riddell said that it- was one of those distressing accidents which happened -without warning. There was nothing to show how deceased came to be- found at tbe bottom. His finding would be that- deceased was 'accidentally drowned. Reason able care was taken by the caretaker, and no blame could be attached to anyone.
