It is pleasing fo lind that Bake Kauieri
promises to come into its own as a popular tourist and holiday resort.. Over a considerable period now much has been done in l.lie way of advertising to make the charms of ilm lake wider known. The Acclimatisation and Tourist Society has spent several hundreds of pounds in the past to advertise the lake with special publications. It, was the Society which introduced the launch and made the Dorothy Falls trip so popular, hater. I lit* Progress League has spent large sums in advertising Ilia lake in particular in conjunction with other purls of the district worthy of attention, 'flic Government has helped, too, in various directions. Now with the increased passenger Ira (lie to the Coast by reason of the Arthur's Pass Tunnel, and the growing vogue of motoring, Lake Kauieri—itself a scenic gem—has become quite the popular resort. Having attracted tip* people. Lhcr • accommodation must be. provided for. It is quite right as has been proposed, to set. apart locations for public bathing and in narticiilar the two sites mentioned. Sunny Bight and Hans Bay. both have special leal tires for the purpose. being in particular very safe locations, and well removed from any fear of possible cotuaminat ion with the town water supply. As to the restrict ions proposed with regard to r - sidonros these should 1c enforced with judgment and bv tir-t providing alternative sites. h is obvious a boat shed must l,e adjacent In (he water side, bid residences in places used as such, even lor a dav could well be somewhat remote I roil! the lake waters to avoid possible eoiitaininal ion. This is ,m obvious nr ■(•nut ion for health’s sake, which will commend itself, and if the matter is handled rcasomihly. those a fleet ed will no doubt conform to any change brought about. At tin* same time, nothing should le done in haste which would have tile effect of undoing tin* past effori to build up (he public pal milage to Luke Kauieri. 7l "ill not be fair (o Fie local organisations which for so niattv years past have realised what was due the scenic resort, and have given time and money to assume its future. However, the
matter is now engaging attention, and as there is a good deal to be said by all concerned, no doubt steps will be taken fa see that the sniped is handled with the best intent ion in the best possible public wav.
