At tlie twentieth annual meeting of the Alaster Printers' Industrial Association. the President (Air T. Somerville) dealt at length with mnnv matters affecting the industry. The need for the appontmont of a permanent secretary was stressed. Dealing with the matter of revision of the tariff, the Pi esident said he would like to point out that the remedy of the present decrease in business does not lie entirely in the increase of tariff, nor "ill the imposition of further duty stop the importation of lines that can he manufactured here. The solution lies along two main avenues, an increase in the produeton of our primary products and a rise in the world’s parity over which lie had no control, while the other is to reduce importations to a point where the balance of exports over imports will he sufficient to meet flic necessary interest on loans floated abroad. 'a carter, sued Edgar Johnston, a former employee of the plaintiff for £SOO damages for alleged slander. It was alleged that .Johnston had made an unfounded charge of dishonesty against Sandford. in suggesting that lie had stolen a sack of coal. The case was heard by Air Justice Adams and a jury of twelve. The verdict was for the defendant, with costs. INQUEST VERDICT. HASTIXGS. Feb. 15. At an inquest on Alexander Alitehell AYightnn, drowned at Waimarama while bathing on Sunday last, the Coroner in returning a verdict of accidental drowning said the conduct of everyone concerned was most commendable, especially Afi-s Doris Done, who bad sir,von lino courage in risking her life.
