As the result of an accident on Fri dav, on her lather’s farm at Solwvn
a little girl, (i years of age, Agnes Joyce Swanson, was brought to the Christchurch Hospital, and died there under ail anaesthetic. The girl was playing in a field where, her brother was cutting peas, and ran in front of
the mower, her right foot being badly cut. An inquest was opened at the Hospital on Saturday morning before tlie Coroner, Mr E. J). Mosley, and was adjourned for the purpose of a postmortem examination after evidence of identification had been given.
Among' the oversea visitors who will he deer stalking in South Westland in the approaching season will he Dir Godfrey William, the Welsh coal magnate, who is touring the world in the steam yacht ''Surprise.” Mr Williams is now camped in the Dlakarora country with a large party of friends, and as lie intends to stay in that region some two or three mouths has a comfortable camp. In all there are about thirty tents and he has ten saddle horses for the use of his party. Among other conveniences at the camp is a fowl run for the daily supply of fresh eggs and poultry.
All streets this evening will lead to the .Municipal swimming hatlis where a novelty programme "ill be presented. There "ill be fun and frolic all the evening. The baths will he alive with full; old and young while at intervals there will he special stunts. The obstacle race is going to he a source of great fun. .Another event, which "ill afford a special thrill will he tint .Monte C'risto net. In this a swimmer will he enclosed in a sack on the high spring hoard. All the electric lights will he extinguished, and the sack will he set on lire. When well ablaze the swimmer will dive into the pool, free himself of the hag. and as the lights go up, swim ashore. There will he several other novel items, and the hand will supply a musical programme. It will be a treat in any ease to see the young folk disporting themselves to their hearts’ content in the swimming pool. With such favourable weather there is sure to he a record attendance to-night, and patrons should make it a point of going early.
At the Alarist Brothers’ jubilee at Clreymouth on Sunday, .Mr H. F. Doogan presided over a large gathering of Hibernians and Alarist old hoys at communion breakfast. He welcomed Bishop Brodie and Brother Justin. Provincial of the Order, ant} congratulated the Alarist Brothers on the academic achievements of their scholars throughout the Dominion. Brother AA*. P. Sullivan, on behalf of the Hibernians, extended congratulations to the Alarist Brothers, who worked hand in hand with them. Bishop Brodie, in acknowledging the cordial reception, spoke appreciatively of the faith and generosity of the Greymouth Church. He expressed gratitude for the service done by the Alarist Brothers and complimented them on fifty years of progress. Brother Justin, Provincial of the Order in New Zealand, said that it gave him great pleasure to return after eight years’ absence. He had noted the progress the Order had made in Greymouth. whose school would compare with any in the Dominion. The brothers were grateful to the people of Greymouth for their generous assistance.

To-day thirty-six trucks of live stock, including lambs, cattle and pigs were railed overland for to-morrow’s sale at Addington. The bulk is from South Westland, there being 31 trucks of lambs in the consignment.

The vehicle was almost hopelessly damaged, also a bicycle and n quantity of clothing. The driver. Mill. A. Blackman, escaned without injury. It is understood (hat there was a small insurance on the car. which will not nearly cover the loss. ]t is stated that the car, which was left by the roadside, was later visited hv some despicable person or persons, who removed from the vehicle the lamps and other fittings, which had not been destroyed. The remnants of the burnt bicycle also claimed ihe attention of the thieves.
