Goods traffic railed from the West Coast through the tunnel last week totalled Sf; 15 tons. A total of appro.ximatelv 4501) lambs and sheep was railed to Canterbury from the West Coast this week. .Most of the sheep and lambs came from the lnaugahua and .Murchison district. Might trucks of entile and two of pigs were also railed to the Mast Coast.
The reply made by a witness to an apparently innocent question caused n ripple of laughter in the .Magistrate’s Court, at Auckland, one day last week. A man and his wife wore being sued for a sum of money and counsel had commenced to examine the first witness lor the defence. “ Von are the son of one of the defendants in this case?” he asked. “Roth,” responded the wiluess drily. When a jury retires to consider its verdict, it is not expected that there will he absolute equanimity, but it is seldom that there are “words” between the twelve goad men and true (says the Auckland “Star”). However, when the jury had been considering their verdict for some time, a loud voice that prnlraled the building. was heard to shout: “I’m not a sheen’s head. Mvervone is entitled to his own opinion, and] will stay here all night if necessary.” A policeman was dispatched post haste to act as a steadying inflinence on the men who were deciding the fate of a lcllow cilyien. The .Railway Department has arranged to have men on guard on all railwav lines in Canterbury along which the Duke and Duchess will travel. There will he a man at every levelcrossing. every large bridge, every station yard, and every dangerous part of the line. There will he two men at

In connection with the re-licensing ol motor-vehicles for the year 1927-2 K. motor-vehicles must lie re-licensed before Ist April. 1027. Pinch and white plates cannot he lawfully used after the .‘list March. 1027. Plates for the year 1027-22 (orange on black i are now available, and owners of motor vehicles are requested to make early application for them, thereby relieving congestion towards the end of March. The orange on black (dates must not ho used before the Ist Anril. 1027. Owners using vehicles upon which the orange and black (dates are not displaced on and after Ist April 1927, are 1e.'.l- t.o a fine of £2O for each day the vehicle is used.
A record catch of trout for Taupe was taken last Sunday morning by a | party of four, headed by Ad,r T. Kickit, of Taupo (states the “ Auckland Star”). Pishing in AVhakaipo Bay, about eight miles from the Taupo township. on the northern shores of the lake, not far front the mouth of the Mapnra stream, the party caught (if) trout in an hour and n half. The fish averaged seven pounds, and the largest was twelve pounds. All were in excellent condition. On Saturday last Captain E. T. H. Cnrlyou, of Hawke’s I’a.v caught 22 trout, averaging seven pounds, at Waitahanui fora few hours’ idling. Tourist tin flic to the district is reported to he easily double that of last season, showing the great, need of future accommodation. At AVhakaipo Pay. a new resort is being established, and. during the past two or three weeks, there has been an average of three or four launehtuls of interested visitors daily.

The Brunner District Mxcursion visited Hokitika on Saturday, numbering about 500 souls, and were located on Cass Square. The perfect day experienced assisted to make the, excursion an enjoyable one, and all appeared to have had a pleasant holiday.
