Tun proposal mentioned through our columns lately of a hack to the Coast movement, suggested in the hist, instance by .Air (1. H. Hunter, of Christchurch, formerly Town C'lerk of llunanga., is meeting with a good deal of general approval. The matter is being taken up in Greymouth where t'r .morning paper is giving the idea good hacking. Westport is also considering the matter and proposes having a carnival time at Christmas. Hokitika has opportunities of a very attractive holiday period, and if a strong committee would take the matter up. The two race days at Christmas could be tb" basis of the extended function, and as they fall on Monday and Tuesday would be a good opening for the week. AVednesday could be Pioneer’s Day with a monster picnic at Lake Muhinapun—making it a. big reunion day for Coasters generally. Thursday could witness a monster procession with an athletic gathering, and probably a band contest on the racecourse. On Friday there could lie a regatta and picnic outing at Lake Kanieri. Saturday would be New Year’s Eve. and most people would he disposed to attend the Greymouth races, but at night Hokitika could wind up its week of reunion with old Coasters and gathering of natives from all parts of the Dominion, with an old time torchlight procession and fireworks display. A programme on lines such as outlined would serve to give the town n very lively air over the holiday period, and it would he exceedingly pleasant to see an influx of ex-Coasters still in-1 terested in the welfare of the old place, and glad to He back to renew old acquaintance. Christmas is quite the right season of the year to further such a gathering, and with the opportunity to do so in such a complete manner, the chance should not be missed. For such an occasion a beginning cannot be made too soon, as there is much spade work to he done in ndvertfsng the occasion abroad, and getting former residents abroad interested in the event, and booked up to j '

make the trip to the Const at tlie holiday period. Once here, the visitors will liiul much to entertain themselves with outside tho set programme, and altogether general affairs over the Christmas and New Year season w add have a great fillip.
