(From Our Own Correspondent)
Owing to the lack of orders several sawmills in this district are closing down for the time being. The two mills of Stuart and Chapman, Ltd., close to-day, Wednesday. throwing about 50 men out of employment. The Ferngrove mill at Ferguson’s will probably close in about a week’s time which will idle about another 20 men. It is understood that there are considerable stocks of sawn timber on hand, much of it being white pine, for which there is at present lttle sale. The work of filleting this in order to prevent deterioration will provide work for a few of the mill-hands for some days but the outlook appears anything but bright. The effect of the slump will hit this district particularly hard as considerably more than 50 per cent of the population are dependent on sawmill work. ,
