USE OF GAS
GROWINC DEMAND. POPULARITY OF COOKER. Gas shares were at a, low elib when the Wellington City Council purchased the works and rights of the Electric Light and Power Company in 1907. At that time the Gas Company was willing to sell out to the city for the price of a song. But City Councillors laughed at the idea of purchasing such an obsolete tiling as a gas works. Since then the Gas Company lias gone its own way. and lias grown in strength in spite of the competition of electric light and power. Tlie annual report of the company shows that the demand for gas continues to grow each year. During last year 1825 gascookers were installed. This establishes a record—the previous highest number being 1370 in 1925. As the result of the year’s operations ordinary shareholders were paid a dividend of 8 per cent, and debentureholders were given the option of realising on their holdings for cash.
