FARMERS MEET. DANNEVIRKE, Feb, 4

A monster farmers rally! embracing the district. AVoodville and Hastings was held in Diwmovirko Town Hall last evening in continuation of tho Farmers Union campaign to enlighten the towns people of the conditions which fanners have at present to contend with and enlist their sympathy. The speakers included Mayor A. J. O. Rum-ilium, Messrs AV. J. Poison (President of the Dominion Farmers Union), General Sir Andrew Russell and Air J. 8. JeSsep, vice-Clmir-mim of the .Meat Board). In the course of an address Afr Poison touched on the high cost of production, taxation of farmors. financial assistance. exploration of new markets, tariff reform and hdiour problems. He advocated a square deal for the farmer and said if town and country people pulled together they would be able to get legislation passed which would right the present wrongs. Sir Andrew Russell said the standard of ljfo was what they could dig out of tho soil, that and nothing else. The farmers did not want to pay lower wages, but. wanted a better reward for what they paid and a bigger output. He touclmd on tho necessity for cheap money. a wider knowledge of farmers, hard work, and thrift. Air Jcssep commented upon the present unemployment and said it was h crying shame and attributed tho blame largely tu the Arbitration Court which had outlived its usefulness and had become merely a wages fixing court without regard to whether tho indusAy could stand nil increase or not.

Resolutions were carried similar to those at the Wanganui rally in December. referring to the Secretary ol Labour, economy in public expenditure, and a reduction of taxation, rural finance and marketing. Before two local justices George Iduia Brewer, alias Jack Wilson. Edgar Arthur Peterson, alius Robert Conway, and George Curtis Coleord, pleaded guilty to various charges of breaking and entering and were committed to Wellington for sentence, orders being made For the return of stolen property. Brewer and ‘Peterson were further charged with stealing all Ajax ear valued at £350 at Alaungapakohn and were remanded to Wellington. COUNTY COUNCIL JUBILEE. AIARTON, February L The fiftieth anniversary of the Rangitikei County Council was celebrated Yesterday by a gathering of Council Chairmen. Ex-members of the parti included Hon. Newman. Messrs Glenn and Hockley, AL* .’x, and C. Al. Galpeon, a pioneer who settled in Rang! tikei in 1855. An interesting historical sketch of tho county’s history was read by H. H. Jesse Bmldely. aged 50. a co-opera-tive miner, whilst repairing a bridge damaged by the recent rams near Dunollie this afternoon fell from the bridge into the creek breaking lus nock. He vjOs a native of Lancashire and had resided at Runanga for the last 20 years. He leaves a widow and two sons.
