‘‘Every country, if it is a democracy, gets the politicians it deserves, but it is essential in democracy that statesmanship should not be limited to politicians. but in regard to carrying on industry there must be statesmanship on the part of employers and on the part (if unions. Upon that statesmanship 1 believe the futune depends. and not upon setting up special organisations, not upon industries by Government, but upon real feeling that however confused views may lie on the future construction of society and the real changes of the future, if the country is to pull through its existing conditions there must he real statesmanship both among trade unions and the great federation of employers, and they must null together and each must bring bis contribution for tbe success of the industry, and recognise that statesmanship is ucyesary niul that they must work for the prosperity of their own industry.”—Viscount- Grey.
