The laying of the foundation stones of the first Roman Catholic Church school and convent at Canberra,' was the occasion of a national pilgrimage of Roman Catholic representatives of all States, over five thousand being present, including the Archbishops of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. ATHLETICS. MELBOURNE, Jan. 31. At the amateur intcr-Club athletic meeting. W. Weight of Melbourne Harriers. broke the Australian and New Zealand record for 1,500 metres, covering the distance in four minutes eleven and one-tenth seconds. •SMALLPOX. PERTH, Jan. 31. The steamer Niagara arrived at Fremantle from Calcutta, and was quarantined, having landed a case of smallpox at Singanore. WEEK-END* FATALITIES. SYDNEY. Jan. 31. 1 AY eek-end accidents in Sydney wore six deaths and four persons critically injured. Of the deaths four were the result of motor accidents. One man fell and fractured his skull. Jockey .McCall ey succumbed to injuries.
