THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
A Bookman’s Utopia. “The faults of the English booktrade lie with the reading public. If they would give to reading a little more thought and care; if they would rank books a little higher in their schedule of daily needs and pleasures; ii they would become a little readier to spend ten shillings on a book instead of sixteen shillings on a theatre ticket, or thirty shillings on a tew days worth of cigars ; if. in fact, they could he persuaded to regard hooks as a part of their lives and to judge between them as carefully as they judge between qualities of handkerchiefs or linoleum or golf balls—then would the various groups that exist to eater for their needs rise to the occasion and adorn it. At least one hopes that they would.”—Michael Sadlier in the “ Observer.”
