THE ROYAL VISIT.
ROYAL CRUISER. THROUGH PANAMA CANAL. [Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received tins day at 12.25 p.m.) COLON, January 25. 11..M.5. Renown arrived at Colon at six this morning and was escorted up the harbour by the battleship Arkansas, exchanging salutes. Daylight saw an entire fleet of aeroplanes from I* raiicelield aerodrome circling over the Renown in squadron formation, making ail impressive welcome to American territory. No time was lost in ent<ring the canal and the Renown was well within the dredged elmnncl before sunrise.
Braithwaife, British Minister, the naval attache from. Washington and the British Consul. Ford, boarded the vessel while in motion and were received b.v a Guard of Honour. Gatun Lock was reached at 7.30, the battleship being handled most efficiently by an American pilot. The ship was held sometime at the lowest level on account of a low tides, barely clearing tllie sides, while the necessity for waiting for sufficient water at Balboa also operated in a delay in the actual entering of the locks. At the first dock. Governor Walker, of Panama, General Martin (commanding the military), Admiral Day (commanding the naval district), Admiral Bans (from the kansas ”) and their staff’s paid official calls.
The Duke received them with all ceremonial on the quarter deck. Thereafter the Royal Party left the ship and were received ashore by other dignitaries.
The hand of tho 1 Ith Regiment played tlu> National Anthem and the Duke inspected a Guard of Honour. The party was then taken a short way to see Gatun spillway, which was specially turned oil for their benefit, making a fine waterfall display. 'ldle party returned in time to hoard the Renown at the upper level of the dock, proceeding across Gatun Lake.
