Mr E. C. Sutcliffe, who is on the Coast organising a Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Union is in Hokitika. AMien jeen by our reporter this morning Mr Sutcliffe said that the response made in Greymouth to join a union had exceeded his expectation and the union had been formed and the employer of labour lmd been invited to a conference to consider the adoption of the Dominion Award. Mr Sutcliffe said it was certain that an award would be made in the terms of the Dominion Award. All other industrial districts in New Zealand were under an award of the Court except Westland, awl it was expedient that this district should be brought in line. Mr Sutcliffe said be had approached several of the workers in the industry - m Hokitika and had met with a good reception, several signing applications to join the union. Ho said that trade was not too good nor work too plentiful in Canterbury and other districts, as formally, and the workers there were now realising the benefit of having conditions of labour so regulated that a minimum was set and he believed the present unrest would he to the best interests of both employer and employee.
