[Australian & N.Z. Cable Association. RAILWAY ENGINE DESIGN. •(' ißeceived this day at 9.0 a.m.l BERLIN, Jan. 23. A revolutionary design in railway engines, regarded as of international importance, has been completed at Dusseldorf. in cb-operation with Krupps. It is a diesel, oil driven of twelve hundred horse power. The locomotive requires no water, and is intended for use in Russia, land other countries where vast tracts do not facilitate a water supply. Representatives of British, Russian, Japanese, Norwegian and Canadian railways were present at the official tests, when tho locomotive pulled a load of 1350 tons up a steep grade with •ease. It requires one fifth less fuel than tho ordinary type of engine of equal power. PRISONER SWALLOWS SPOONS. BERLIN, Jan. 23. A forger, Adolf Moritz, many times obtained release from gaol as a result of swallowing spoons in preference to hunger striking. The /authorities thought to treat him by providing giant spoons with specially long handles. Moritz again became ill and four spoons were missing. An X-ray showed he had swallowed the handles. Tho authorities performed an operation, after which Moritz was charged with stealing prison property.
