H-.bies born witli a lmir-lip 'need „„t go through life, with disfiguring
scars. Hr (icorce Y. E Grown, ol Milwaukee. has just reported t<i the American Atocli<a.l Association, that l,v coml.ining the technique of several „id methods of operating lie has evolved what is virtually a new operation, or rather a series of operations U,at, corrects this unhappy malformation with brilliant results. As soon after tho afflicted baby is born as is practicable. Dr Jlrowu closes the harelip, at the same time reconstructing the nose lip in such a way as to assure correct breathing. A) hen the child is from d to 9 months old an operation on the clolt palate is undertaken and a year later a final operation eomnletes Iho reconstruction of (fie palate before wrong speech habits have become established. The miner jaw is preserved as intact as possible so that the eruption of the teeth in nearly natural positions contributes to the return of flic defective lip to norma! outlines. Comparatively unnoticenhle scars and a- minimum of speech difficulties have characterised the beneficiaries of the Milwaukee surgeon’s skill. One child whose mouth and nasal deformities were not corrected until past infancy .and who suffered from very imperfect speech, later took a declamation prize at school, it is stated.
