year in April. The occasion is another call to the citzens generally to do their duty. Those "'ho care should certainly offer their services. There is the need for progressive men and particularly young men to come to tlie front and help the fortunes of the town. The future of Westland can bo made the brighter in the shorter time by a healthy municipal atmosphere. Vigor is required and concerted interest in those matters which will tell for the general welfare of the place. If the present occupant resolves, as it is no doubt hoped he will, to offer his services for another mayoral term, Mr Perry’s re-election is a foregone conclusion. It may he anticipated therefore that the customary walk over will result, which prompts us to remark how well Hokitika has been served over many years by .Mr Perry. He has qualiteis which enable him to fill the position "ilk peculiar credit. And he is certainly an economical Mayfir. The cost to the citizens while he has held the post is nil. Again we say how fortunate the town is to have the services of the gentleman who is so well fitted for the important office. As to the rank and file, thero is room for a good team. I ndor the able leadership of the present Mayor the Council would ho well directed. At the same time the Councillors should maintain a progressive policy. Very g.ood work has been done of late by the present Council. It would be well to know just how the financial exchequer stands and to what further degree the Council might go without placing too much of a burden on the ratepayers. There are important works needing attention about the town, and in particular the water supply must he safeguarded zealously. In sympathy with the prosperity of fhe surrounding district. flic town will advance, and the Council should he optimistic enough to anticipate advancement', and in fact endeavour to assist the fortunes of the town in that direction. Probably a contest- for the seats of the Council would he the host, means of stimulating interest inside and outside the local body, and on that account it would l-o pleasing to see sufficient candidates coining forward at least to create a poll. A poll will demand some form of policy and it would ho for Iho members to enumerate it.
